Abstract
The Internet of Things (IoT) devices are increasingly becoming targets for criminal actors. A compromised device can result in data breaches, denial-of-service attacks, and even physical damage. While software-based security solutions are important, they are susceptible to attacks and often impose significant overhead, negatively impacting both performance and battery life. A viable alternative is provided by hardware-based security, which takes advantage of the inherent security benefits that are associated with dedicated hardware implementations. It is possible to greatly reduce the number of vulnerabilities that can be exploited through software by integrating security capabilities directly into the hardware. Virtual Hardware Description Language (VHDL) is a powerful language that enables designers to develop individualized hardware implementations that are tailored to specific security requirements. The growth of IoT devices necessitates the implementation of stringent security measures to protect sensitive data and prevent unauthorized access. This study investigates whether it is possible to use VHDL to construct hardware-based access control methods in IoT systems, as well as whether this approach is effective. A unique architecture for a VHDL-based access control module that is both flexible and resource-efficient is proposed by us. We demonstrate that this architecture has the capability to implement fine-grained access control regulations with low performance overhead. When compared to traditional software-based solutions, the results of the simulation demonstrate a considerable reduction in vulnerability to common software threats. Additionally, we conduct an analysis of the proposed VHDL implementation’s space and power consumption, highlighting the fact that it is suitable for IoT contexts that are limited in terms of resources. A strong argument is presented in this work to support the incorporation of hardware-based access control as an essential layer of defense in the process of protecting the IoT landscape.
