Special Issue Description

Urbanization is a significant predictor of economic growth and should be viewed favorably for overall development. Additionally, when an economy develops, towns and cities grow in population and size, increasing the urban sector’s contribution to the overall economy. There are now more towns and urban agglomerations. Additionally, this urbanization is marked by an insufficient transfer of responsibilities to elected authorities, a lack of sufficient financial resources, resistance to moving toward municipal autonomy, adherence to outmoded methods used to tax property, reluctance to assess user fees, and an inadequate role played by parastatals in the provision of water supply and sanitation services. City planners and managers must make additional efforts to deal with the ever-increasing strain on the urban infrastructure as a result of the size and density of the urban population. In India, the benefits of issuing municipal bonds to finance urban development are becoming more and more clear. Indian Bond Market activity is growing.
