Abstract

With the increasing demand for energy efficiency and sustainability, smart home energy management systems (SHEMS) have emerged as promising solutions to optimize residential energy consumption. This paper presents a comprehensive review of SHEMS technologies, focusing on their design, implementation, and impact. SHEMS integrates advanced sensors, real-time data analytics, and intelligent algorithms to monitor, control, and optimize energy usage within the home environment. By leveraging machine learning and predictive modelling techniques, SHEMS adaptively adjust energy consumption patterns to match user preferences, tariff rates, and environmental conditions. Using smart HEMS integration in conjunction with the rapid improvements in advanced power electronics and alternative energy technologies, as well as the integration of renewable and stored energy sources into residential structures, can improve the efficiency of energy conversion and consumption within homes. Furthermore, SHEMS enable seamless integration with renewable energy sources, grid-level demand response programs, and electric vehicle charging infrastructure, thereby fostering a more resilient and sustainable energy ecosystem. Through case studies and simulation results, we demonstrate the potential energy savings, cost reductions, and environmental benefits associated with SHEMS employment. Finally, we discuss key challenges, research directions, and future opportunities for advancing SHEMS technology towards widespread adoption and societal impact.
