Global Production Networks in rural and regional planning

Special Issue Description
Global Production Networks (GPN) are described as “the nexus of interconnected functions, processes and transactions through which a particular product or service is produced, delivered, and consumed” in the developmental literature. More than 80% of global trade is accounted for by global production networks (GPNs), which include a variety of firm and non-firm entities involved in the creation of services and commodities from materials to final consumption. Companies with extensive global networks for manufacturing are well-positioned to satisfy the needs of the on-demand economy of today. International networks enable manufacturers to become more agile, increase production, cut costs, and handle the difficulties presented by a quick sample. Global value chains and production networks provide several difficulties for sustainable production and consumption. As transnational and public governance strive to regulate and control flows that span national boundaries, existing inequities may be strengthened. Farmers and businesses must surmount high entrance hurdles into global production networks and struggle to exit inferior value-added activities to benefit from the advantages. To produce goods and services for huge corporations on international markets, workers usually undergo incredibly challenging daily conditions. While upgrading is a crucial objective, it is frequently elusive and can require trade-offs, whether it be for the economy, workers, or the environment.
