Special Issue Description

Although microwave heating or the processing is quickly becoming an effective and efficient tool in many technological and scientific disciplines, there is still a lack of knowledge on the methods by which microwaves interact with different materials. For example, the mechanisms and consequences of microwave-metal (MW-m) interaction are much more complex than those of typical microwave heating. Electrical discharges, such as corona, spark, or arc discharges, may happen when metals with sharp edges, points, or submicroscopic imperfections are exposed to microwave radiation. These effects can be complicated, resulting in the formation of hot patches, the plasma effect, or the photo-catalytic effect. this procedure provides a comprehensive analysis of the most recent theoretical underpinnings as well as the parameters that affect MW-m discharges. This is followed by a thorough explanation of the unique associated effects from the heating effect, plasma effect, and probable photo-catalytic impact. Following the provision of an overview of the uses of MW-m discharges, the problems and difficulties related to these uses are noted. This study provides a framework for understanding the MW-m discharge phenomenon. In applications like microwave-assisted pyrolysis, pollution removal, material synthesis, and many other domains, it will be advantageous to expand the discharge phenomena and their distinctive impacts.
