Abstract
In the present study, green and efficient Ag-NPs functionalized activated carbon/chitosan-polyvinyl alcohol (AgNPs/AC-CTS-PVA) composite gel was successfully synthesized using water chestnut stem-derived biochar for wastewater treatment and antibacterial applications. The composite was characterized by FTIR, XRD, SEM-EDX, and TGA analyses, confirming the successful incorporation of crystalline Ag nanoparticles within the polymeric matrix and improved thermal stability. The material was tested regarding the removal of the dye of methylene blue (MB) under different conditions of the experiment. The optimum dye removal rate reached 98% at pH 7 when 20 mg adsorbent dose was used within 60 min, kinetic modeling of the adsorption reaction was performed that the reaction adhered to the Elovich model (R² = 0.9622), which means it was heterogeneous surface chemisorption, and intra-particle diffusion was also a significant contributor to the isotherm analysis indicated a very good fit to the Langmuir model (R² = 0.9938) with a maximum adsorption capacity (Qₘ) of 106.38 mg g⁻¹, indicating that the adsorption occurred in a monolayer fashion. Furthermore, the composite exhibited remarkable antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus and Pseudomonas aeruginosa, producing a 38 mm and 36 mm inhibition zone, comparable to penicillin (42 mm). The findings demonstrate that the synthesized AgNPs/AC-CTS-PVA gel is a promising multifunctional material for sustainable wastewater remediation and antimicrobial applications.
