Abstract

This Article provides an in-depth exploration of the recent innovations in biopolymer-based food packaging, highlighting natural materials like starches and proteins, as well as synthetic biopolymers such as polylactic acid (PLA). With the escalating global concerns about environmental degradation and the detrimental effects of plastic waste, there has been a growing emphasis on finding eco-friendly, biodegradable substitutes to reduce plastic pollution and dependence on fossil fuels. Among the biopolymer alternatives, starch and protein-based materials are drawing attention for their renewability, biodegradability, and non-toxic nature. Starches, for example, are abundant, inexpensive, and can be sourced from various plant-based raw materials, while proteins can offer unique functionalities such as enhanced water resistance and film-forming properties. On the other hand, synthetic biopolymers like PLA, derived from renewable plant resources like corn, provide durability and versatility while being compostable, making them a viable replacement for conventional plastics in food packaging. The development of biopolymer blends and nanocomposites is another key area of focus. By combining different biopolymers or incorporating nanomaterials such as nanoparticles, these blends and composites can achieve enhanced mechanical strength, improved barrier properties, and better moisture resistance, which are crucial for food packaging applications.  This review brings together insights into the various types of biopolymer packaging materials, their properties, production processes, and applications. By exploring the potential of these materials, the paper highlights their ability to revolutionize the food packaging industry, offering both environmental sustainability and functional improvements over traditional plastic packaging. With increasing research and industrial interest, biopolymer-based packaging holds great promise for addressing critical environmental issues, offering a more sustainable, biodegradable, and eco-friendly solution to food packaging in the near future.
