The Unani system of medicine provides a holistic understanding of neurological disorders, emphasizing the role of Su’-i-Mizaj (dystemperament) in the spinal cord (Nukhā) and nerves (A‘ṣāb). According to Unani scholars like Ali Ibn Abbas Majusi, disturbances in the mizaj-e-tabai (natural temperament) of Nukhā lead to various neurological conditions, categorized into Istirkhā’ (Flaccidity), Abar Bilqisiya (Bell’s Palsy), Khaddar (Numbness), Tashannuj (Convulsions), and Ra‘sha (Tremors). The most common dystemperament in Nukhā and A‘ṣāb is Su’-i-Mizaj Bārid Raṭb (Cold and Moist Dystemperament), leading to conditions like Falij (Paralysis), Ikhtilāj (Fasciculations), and Laqwa (Facial Palsy). Other types, including Su’-i-Mizaj Yabis (Dry), Har (Hot), and Raṭb (Moist), contribute to spastic convulsions, palpitations, and nerve compressions. Unani medicine attributes these disorders to factors like excessive cold exposure, imbalance of bodily humors, and obstruction (Sudda) in the flow of Ruh-e-Nafsaniyah (Psychic Pneuma). Treatment involves restoring the natural temperament through Ilaj Bil Ghiza (Dietary Therapy), Ilaj Bil Dawa (Herbal Medicine), Ilaj Bil Tadbeer (Regimenal Therapy), and Ilaj Bil Yad (Surgical Interventions). This article highlights the scientific relevance of Unani principles in understanding and managing neurological conditions. The Unani approach, with its emphasis on temperamental balance, holistic healing, and personalized treatments, remains a valuable system for addressing neurological disorders in a natural and integrative manner.
